National Teachers’ Prize Nepal 2016
‘Guru Dakshina’: Acknowledging and promoting Excellence in Teaching in Nepal.
As the popular saying goes in Nepal, “Teachers are children’ second parents” in few special cases, they are the first parents too. The presence and the role of teachers in each of our lives have had a powerful impact leading to the sum of memories of our formidable days. Teachers have been bestowed the responsibility towards orchestrating powerful practices that influence holistic learning and development experiences of children to reach their full potential in life. As I wander through my memories, I remember the teachers who came up to our mountain village school in Nepal, their commitment to educate us and their characters have left lasting impressions on me, inspiring me to be the person I am today.
These experiences have urged me towards the rhetoric of how teachers could drive schools as leaders, advocate change, inclusion and innovation towards catering to the needs of the children and the entire community. The seed to such transformation in education need to be planted, and more so the key actors acknowledged. Hence, Childreach Nepal has been running the project, Teachers Development for Quality Education that has been specially designed to encourage and support teachers to develop professionally through training with the aim of rewarding them.
This is simply our privilege and honour to initiate “National Teachers’ Prize Nepal” in partnership with the Global Teacher’s Prize of Varkey Foundation UK, the Ministry of Education Nepal and Childreach Nepal to recognize and reward excellence in teaching, sustained achievement and creating best practices through innovative teaching by teachers in our country. It further emphasizes our commitment towards fostering excellence in child-centred and contextual pedagogies, participatory teaching strategies, encouraging innovation and providing leadership in sharing best practices in teaching.
This initiative aims to acknowledge 7 to 10 best Nepalese teachers for the dedication and commitment to their craft and positive, powerful and long lasting presence in the lives of the children- the future of our nation and the world!
