Brian Lara Prize for Sports Education
International cricket legend Brian Lara believes in the power of sports education to build teamwork and resilience on the field and in the classroom.
He generously donated US $10,000 to The Varkey Foundation as prize money for the best sports education projects by the students of our Global Teacher Prize finalists.
Brian has chosen the two winning projects, which will both receive a US $5,000 award:
Christian Williams, Australia, “St. Michael’s Cricket Factory”
Christian’s students make cricket equipment for children living in disadvantaged areas and have already held discussions with Cricket Australia about expanding the scope of their project.
Brian told us that he was enormously impressed with the students’ project and its focus on the importance of sport and community engagement.
Yasmin Noorulamin, Malaysia, “Rugby and the Flag Challenge”
Yasmin’s students climbed Mount Kinabalu and set themselves a trekking challenge in order to improve the strength and resilience of their school’s rugby team.
Brian told us that he had been inspired by the team’s commitment and drive.
