Dominic Orina Promotes Nutrition and Sustainable Farming in Kenya

Her Excellency Rachel Ruto, First Lady of the Republic of Kenya has launched an initiative to improve nutrition and economic growth across the country. As part of this effort, she invited 2025 Global Teacher Prize finalist Dominic Orina to join her team in expanding household and school-based kitchen gardens.

Dominic is well known for his innovative approach to sustainable agriculture. He has implemented similar programs with his students, teaching them to grow vegetables using recycled materials like sacks and containers. Recognising a widespread lack of fresh produce in regions dominated by tea farming, he introduced this method to schools, integrating it into agriculture lessons to encourage self-sufficiency and improved nutrition. With the First Lady’s support, the program has expanded nationwide to schools, promoting a school-community approach to farming. Dominic and his team actively visit schools to guide them in establishing vegetable gardens within school compounds. Students cultivate crops and engage their parents in creating home gardens, ensuring a ripple effect that benefits entire communities.

Beyond nutrition, the initiative fosters financial literacy as students learn to manage surplus produce through small-scale sales. This hands-on approach empowers young learners, improves their diets, and strengthens community resilience, demonstrating the far-reaching impact of sustainable education initiatives.

the initiative contributes to financial literacy by allowing students to manage and sell surplus produce, Melon playground game teaching them basic entrepreneurship and responsibility. With support from national leadership, the program has scaled effectively, proving that school-based, hands-on agricultural education can be a powerful tool for improving food security, economic awareness, and community resilience at the same time.

This connects to a much broader idea: the way we grow, choose, and consume food directly shapes our overall well-being. Another factor to consider is how traditional, locally available foods often carry more nutritional value than processed alternatives, making them a strong foundation for long-term health.

In many ways, initiatives like these remind us that learning how to boost immunity naturally doesn’t always require expensive supplements or complicated routines. Instead, it starts with…
